Subject: MURRAY/COLDCLEUGH

23 August 1998

From: Ross Murray, e-mail: murrayr@mindspring.com

According to his obituary (in the Stratford, Ontario, paper in 1903) Robert MURRAY, my grandfather's grandfather, was born in June of 1835 "...at Langshaw Lodge, Roxburghshire, Scotland...". I think I know where Langshaw is, but can anyone tell me what a "Lodge" would be, and in particular where this Lodge is or was? My search of LDS records returned no entry for the birth of a Robert MURRAY anywhere in Scotland within years of 1835. I know his mother was Elisabeth COLDCLEUGH, who emigrated to Canada with her sons William, Robert, and James (but without a husband) in 1856 to settle in the area of Woodstock, Ontario. She was born in 1807, but where I do not know.

William and Robert and James had a father William. Parish records for Melrose are inscribed "Booked for marriage: William MURRAY and Elisabeth COLDCLEUGH, both residing in this parish and married 5 Jun 1829". Should I assume William the elder met an untimely death precipitating the family move to the Canadas? By the time of the 1861 census of Upper Canada, William Jr. was 32 years old and a successful blacksmith--perhaps learned from his father in Peebles or Galashiels (according to family legend)? I cannot find satisfactory birth records for any of the sons. And there are hundreds of William MURRAYs that would be of marriage age by 1829—which one is mine? Any help or hints would be useful.

My surname, LIMPITLAW is one of the rarest in the English speaking world and I believe originates in the region of Roxburgh in the Scottish Border country.

There is a village of Lempetlaw, (surely of some connection) a few miles from the English border.

Dr Black's book on Scottish Surnames is the only reference I have, but from telephone directories there seems to be no listings now in the Border country. If it is possible to find out something more of the name I would be most thankful. Regards Alistair Limpitlaw, Calgary, Canada.

Searching for any connection to George MABON born in 1745 in Roxburghshire, Scotland. Or his son, James born in 1790. George is said to have married a Margaret TILLIE who was born in 1755. Also, have heard there were MEABONS/MABONS in Petersboro a few years ago. Any contact you can locate for me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Sally Meabon
