Subject: THOMPSON
6 March 1998
From: Margaret Vrkljan, Australia, e-mail: marg@rint.com.au
Would there be any court records available for a convict Agnes THOMPSON aka Nanny THOMPSON wife of Robert HUNTER who was transported to Australia on the Lord Sidmouth in 1823 for 7 years. The trial was apparently held in Jedburgh Spring which I am told is an old name for Roxburgh. Correct me if I'm wrong. I do not know what her crime was or whether she left any children back in Scotland. She married James LOVE in Tasmania Australia after about 7 years so the separation by water for 7 years could have been the basis for being able to be married and perhaps Robert HUNTER was still alive at this time back in Scotland. Any suggestions would me most welcome.

From: Mary Dain, e-mail: mdain@frontiernet.net
My surname family DEAN (sometimes DAIN) immigrated from Co. Donegal Ireland to US in 1850s. The family identified themselves as Scottish from the border between Scotland and England. I believe they immigrated from Scotland to Ireland about 1770. I have found several other Dean researchers with families from Roxburghshire, so I am currently looking in this area.
Does anyone with a knowledge of local history of Roxburghshire know if there was some kind of upheaval or unrest in that area in the 1770s? Several other Dean families that say they immigrated to either Ireland or Canada/US at that time. Related families were GIVAN, BRICE, NOBLE.
Anyone with any information about these families, please e-mail me. Thank you!

From: Geoff Clarke, e-mail: gclarke@kingston.net
James HUTSON (born circa 1795) married Margaret STODART, apparently in Ashkirk. They had several children while in Ashkirk: Helen (1821), Walter (1823), Isabel (1825), and James (1828) before emigrating to Ontario, Canada around 1830.
I think that Margaret STODART was born in Ashkirk on 28 March 1800 to Walter STODART (STODDART, STODARD) and Isabel TAIT.
I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who knows anything about either the HUTSON or STODART lines.

Subject: STEPHENSON

From: Gilbert Murray, e-mail: happyman@datasync.com
Hugh Eskew STEPHENSON and wife Jemima WHILLANS, both born probably ca. 179 83-96 where? were parents of Isabella STEPHENSON born ca. 1817 at Roxburgh (she m. James POCOCK at St. Cuthberts, Edinburgh in 1839 - my line) and William STEPHENSON b. Ancrum ca. 1823 (m. 1) Helen ANDERSON where?, 2) Barbara THOMSON in 1859 at Dundee, lived Rose Street, Edinburgh, wood turner.
Hugh STEPHENSON was listed as a grocer at Kelso in Kelly's 1837 directory, as innkeeper at Kelso on his daughter's marriage cert. in 1839, as a deceased farmer on his son's marriage cert in 1859, as a farm servant (deceased) on his daughter's death certificate.
There were not many WHILLANS in the 1841 census of Roxburghshire - only 11 plus one variant spelling in two of the three rolls of film; all WHILLANS born same county, the variant spelling b. England. The third roll has been ordered but I haven't received it yet. Don't know therefore if Hugh and Jemima are on it. In one family, Walter and Catherine WHILLANS and Jane STEPHENSON were living in the same household; in another, a WHILLANS and a STEPHENSON were next door neighbours. Are they related to my people?
Would like to correspond with anyone working on these names. Do I have cousins out there in cyberspace? Happy hunting, Sonia in the US
