Subject: MacLEOD

7 October 1998

From: Don MacLeod, e-mail: MacLeod806@aol.com

My GG Grandparents, Kenneth MacLEOD, Sr. And Robina MacDONALD were born in Cato, Caithnesshire, Scotland. (Kenneth in 1752.) They were married and had a family before leaving their native Scotland, and according to records, in 1818 they had a family of five. However, as of this date we have been able to trace only three, namely; Kenneth W.; John; and Elizabeth, who accompanied them to Nova Scotia. It is possible that the children we can't account for were older and already married and stayed in Scotland. They migrated to Middle River, Nova Scotia, Canada in 1806.

I have been unable to locate Cato on a map. It is possible that, over the years, it has changed names or became non existent. Additionally a Presbyterian History book states that they were originally from "Reay, Caithness, Scotland."

I have been able to identify over 1500 of their direct decedents, and am interested to see if more of them exist back in Scotland. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am presently writing a family history on their descendants.

From: Wendy, e-mail: rhettjr@msn.com

Am seeking CHARLESON researchers or help in identifying ancestors of Samuel Richard CHARLESON b.1838-1842 in Quebec Province of Canada. His parents came form Scotland and likely MCKAY was prominent in his antecedents.

Because Samuel Richard CHARLESON and his wife Catherine McDONALD (daughter of James and Jane McDONALD of Inverness shire ,Scotland) named their only son Donald McKay CHARLESON, I beleive Samuel's grandfather or father's name was Donald. His mother may have been a McKAY. Samuel and his wife named their only daughter Mary Jane CHARLESON. The name Jane may have been from Jane McDONALD but it is likely that Mary was then the name of Samuel's mother..

CHARLESON’s seemed to have been in the Caithness area early so I am hoping someone may be able to help me.

I am the granddaughter of Donald McKay CHARLESON who was very proud of his Highland heritage

Donald SUTHERLAND, 1843-1919, born port of Wick, or Leaithmas, Caithness.

Left Scotland and ended up in Milford Sound, New Zealand, gave name to Sutherland Falls, fifth highest in the world. I would dearly love to hear from anyone who may be able to shed information about his parents or brothers and sisters? Think Father Donald SUTHERLAND (sailmaker), Mother Isabella STRACHAN.

Any help much appreciated

From: Simon Gunn, e-mail: simon.gunn@virgin.net

I am trying to find one of my forebears, William GUNN, born 28.May.1863 at Castleton, Olrig. Parents were William GUNN and Elizabeth RUGG. I have found him in Thurso in the 1871 census, aged 7, and at 17 in 1881, as a grocer lodging in Pultneytown, Wick. That is the last record I have of him. I have found no marriage or death in Caithness, and annoyingly, none of the older members of the family knew of his existence. I have been trying to find further records of him for the past 9 months..........any ideas ?
